8 Things To Keep In Mind To Mitigate The Spread Of HMPV

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus first identified in 2001, has surfaced once again as a threat. Cases have been reported in India, in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Ahmedabad. The silver lining is that health authorities, including Union Health Minister JP Nadda, have tried to allay the public's fears by saying that HMPV is not a new virus and has been circulating globally for many years. HMPV infects all age groups, and therefore,  it is important to take precautions to limit its spread.

HMPV spreads primarily through respiratory droplets, so hygiene and preventive measures are of prime importance. We spoke to our expert Dr Bhumesh Tyagi, Consultant- General Medicine and General Physician, Shardacare - Health City, Noida, and asked him to share a few tips to reduce its spread. Here is what he shared with us.

Good Hand Hygiene

If not anything, COVID-19 taught us to wash our hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Maintaining good hand hygiene is very important to mitigate the spread of any virus. Therefore, wash them well and frequently. Dr Tyagi suggested using alcohol-based hand sanitisers when soap and water are not available. Additionally, avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth, with unwashed hands.

Wearing Masks in Public Places

The wearing of masks may significantly prevent the droplets from spreading. Ensure that the mask covers your nose and mouth and you are distanced from someone who is coughing or sneezing.

Respiratory Manners

If you have a cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow. Dispose of the tissues immediately in a closed bin and sanitise your hands afterwards.

Clean Frequently Touched Surfaces

Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, smartphones, and keyboards using the right disinfectants with a good kill rate against respiratory viruses.

Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals

If you or anyone in your household has symptoms of respiratory illness, keep away to avoid possible exposure. Remind them to go home and see a doctor if symptoms are present.

Stay Home if You're Unwell

“If you begin to feel feverish, cough, or have shortness of breath, stay home from work or school or out of public places,” Dr Tyagi recommended.  Seek medical care as soon as possible and heed your physician's recommendations.

Maintain Healthy Immunity

Three things–a well-rounded diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, sufficient fluids, and staying active–will ensure you are at the lowest risk of catching any virus.

Protect Vulnerable People

Babies, old folks and individuals with weakened immune systems should be protected since they are more prone to severe illness. Restrict them to crowded places and have their vaccination schedules updated

Bottomline

Even though HMPV is not a new virus, its re-emergence requires constant preventive efforts. Simple yet effective measures, such as maintaining hygiene, practising respiratory etiquette, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals, can go a long way in mitigating its spread. Being informed and vigilant will help us protect ourselves and those around us from HMPV and other respiratory illnesses.
